Book Review- Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes

“There is one rule. The rule is: there are no rules. Happiness comes from living as you need to, as you want to. As your inner voice tell you to. Happiness comes from being who you actually are instead of who you think you are supposed to be. Being traditional is not traditional anymore.”

“Normalize your lives, people.”

This is one of my favorite quotes from this book. Although this book was a slow read for me it really had an impact on my life. I could see myself in the words that Shonda has written. I think we all can. No matter who you are, where you’re from; you can likely relate to this book if you are a woman who lives and breathes on this planet. I am all about living outside of the box and I root for anyone who does. Sadly I haven’t found my place as of yet.

I would love to give this book a 5 star rating but I prefer to make sure my reviews are honest and from the heart. This book took me a while to read (about 2 weeks to be exact), but I did enjoy it for the most part. I will say; Shonda is a lot like her character on Grey’s and the very thing that drove me crazy about them drove me crazy about this book. I really think she takes herself too seriously. I am happy that she lived this year of saying yes to everything from her career to her health; but I also think she is a serious over-thinker. But hey; she makes the big bucks and I don’t so she must be doing something right.

This book was very motivational for me. It gave me the inspiration to start my own book and also to start getting my health in order; because I also have a toxic relationship with food. It was also great to read from the point of view of another woman of color and a successful one at that. I enjoyed how she talked to the reader as if we were having a casual conversation. Not to mention there are some seriously funny parts in this book (like Whitney Houston’s hair). I think this book is a great read and I think it is a book that every adult women should consider reading. This was our book club read for April and we’ve had our book discussion. Below I would like to share some of the feedback I received on this book.

Many people felt that it was a great read and very motivational. A must read like I said, but some of the aspects of Shonda’s personality was a little off-putting. We all loved how she gained her confidence and got out of her “shell” so to speak. Initially she never wanted to be in the spotlight but she didn’t regret it when she showed up and realized that it was time for her to say YES to herself!

One of the discussion questions asked if we would live a Year of Yes if we were in her shoes. I’d say hell yea, but only if I were in her shoes. A year of yes may be a little easier if you are rich and famous. But either way, we all need to say yes to something and mostly to ourselves. And that, my friends, is what made this book so amazing!

Synopsis:

In this poignant, hilarious and deeply intimate call to arms, Hollywood’s most powerful woman, the mega-talented creator of Grey’s Anatomy and Scandal and executive producer of How to Get Away with Murder and Catch, reveals how saying YES changed her life – and how it can change yours too.
