Like have you seen this movie? OMG!
Can we discuss the movie Black Panther?
I am not a Marvel or sci-fi fan, but I am totally here for this. I don’t know the back story or anything and I don’t need to. I took total bliss in seeing all the black excellence in this movie. I love how they touched on real life issues that effect black people today and has plagued us for centuries.
Now, I was a little conflicted on the good guy vs bad guy situation. I agreed with Black Panther (“good guy”) and I also agreed with Erik Killmonger (“bad guy”). I agree that we do need liberation from our current climate and a one-way ticket to Wakanda, but he was going about it all wrong. We definitely don’t need people to know about the awesomeness of Wakanda because as Killmonger said “Imma take it! How do you think your ancestors got it?” when speaking to one of the only white characters in the movie. We know that’s their way!
Honestly I feel like Black Panther and the people of Wakanda were being a little selfish. But it was all for good reason! And that’s why I feel conflicted!
I don’t want to give too much away of the movie; but just know this, it is a box office success and that is exactly what it needed to be. This movie has grossed about $376 million in the first freaking weekend. Black dollars can move MF mountains! We are tired of being portrayed as thugs and slaves; we are so much more than that. We don’t need a movie to prove it but we need it to be acknowledged. That is what the Black Panther movie has done!
One of my favorite quotes was at the end when Black Panther offered to save Killmonger. Killmonger said, “Bury me in the ocean with my ancestors that jumped from the ships because they knew death was better than bondage.” And this statement spoke volumes of truth to everyone damn person in that theater. Probably even the white folks too!
And let’s not forget about all the beautiful black women in this movie. Angela, Lupita, Danai and Letitia simply gave me all of my life. The melanin in this movie was extremely magical and breathtaking! All I could do is smile. And when Okoye (Danai) snatched her wig off in the fighting scene, I was done!
Have you seen Black Panther? What are your thoughts? I plan to go see it again this weekend. I need another dose!
